"Rug or mat hooking is a time-honoured tradition evolving from the days when winter was long and confining, resources were few, and nothing went to waste. The original method of hooking still prevails. A simple metal hook with a wooden handle, a piece of burlap, en embroidery hoop, strips of fabric or even yarn, and you are ready to start your first piece of hooking.
To many, mat hooking awakens memories of a four-sided, hand-made wooden frame set up on four kitchen chairs, of hand cutting strips from old clothing to fashion into a mat for the hallway or parlour.
Rug hookers today craft many and varied articles such as cushions, wall hangings, pictorial, ornaments, stair runners, in addition to rugs of many shapes and styles. Some are hooked on manufactured patterns printed on burlap, but many, as in the past, are individually designed.
Rug hooking is a satisfying, creative, leisure activity. The cost can be as little or as great as you wish to invest. Recycled materials can be used. It is equally suited to the young, the old, the active, the less active. The basics are simple to master and you are limited only be your imagination."
I use old t-shirts to rug hook. Donations gratefully accepted :).
I will post pictures of my rugs soon. This past Christmas, I gave away rug hooked sets of coasters to family and friends, I didn't take any pictures of them.
